The judge has a rep for fairness and consistency. Judges have problems with the sheriff generally undermining the judicial branch- he has no right to decide the proper sentence for anything.. He only has authority to deal with overcrowding by early release. Unfairly, he has a revolving door for people he likes (celebs, rich folk) rather than cutting a break for ordinary folk who could use a few days off their long sentence (months, not Paris's tiny bit) and are in for obviously non-threatening stuff like possession. DUIs are not non-threatening - until they decide the penalty is too steep, they will continue to drive drunk and have a very high chance of killing/maiming themselves and others. DUIs should be at the bottom of the list for overcrowding-based release. Sorry, Paris.

Paris's fame just meant the sheriff didn't get away with playing judge this time, everybody knew right away and citizens complained. He didn't follow the normal channels for asking for change of sentence for medical reasons, didn't put her in the med wing before "reassigning", didn't get judge's permission. Her pet psychiatrist's opinion doesn't count. Bogus, and the judge knew it.

Methinks either the sheriff (known for vicious retaliation in his own dept against anybody who questions his policies or runs against him) or the Hilton family or both are behind all the nonsense aimed at "bringing down" the prosecutor and the judge. What twits. The sheriff and the Hiltons, I mean. Nobody got killed by a bunch of unpaid parking tickets or no proof of insurance, hence the disinterest of the court in doing anything but issuing bench warrants (translation: they don't go after you until you're stopped for something else). DUIs do kill. Hence DUIs get jailtime for probation violation, parking ticket scofflaws get fines. The prosecutor and judge were just doing their job, treating Paris Hilton like any DUI.
